Parity is boring
So I have been giving this whole "Parity" thing a lot of thought. I think parity is lousy. Imagine your favorite adventure move. The hero, a clean shaven guy with a boyish charm (picture Michael J. Fox) walks into the clean, brightly lit hotel lobby, and the villain, with no swagger or stubble, looking freshly shaved. clothes nice, dress casual. approaches the hero in a totally non threatening posture and they begin to have a heated discussion. Eventually, maybe someone gets slapped. and that is the most exciting scene in the movie. or ANY action adventure movie. Would you go watch action/adventure movies? Probably not. Now think of the Final scene from Willow (if you haven't seen it, well, I guess go watch it for reference) *huge spoiler on a like 20 year old movie here* The evil sorceress is trying to sacrifice the baby, she can cast lightning bolts, fling people around the room, you name it, she can do it, and out steps the dwarf with the baby. *poof!* He makes the baby disappear, Witch lady is so stunned, she accidentally triggers her huge horrible spell to send SOMEONE into oblivion, too bad it was on her. Next thing you know, movies over, they live happily ever after because a dwarf stood up the the seemingly all powerful Queen and did his disappearing pig trick. The point is, just because it looks like someone is going to win (remember the Pats and Giants super bowl?) It ain't over till it's ALL over and that is why you watch. Not because Goodell changes the rules on a week to week basis to try and keep things competitive. No one can do that except the players on the field. my favorite football moments came from when it seemed like a team was down and never gave up. never quit. not because someone called a retarded penalty to save face, or the commissioner tried to make players play flag football. Let the players play. Instead, how about a CBA that includes lifelong medical coverage for injuries incurred while with a team? Bet that would make players hit more carefully than all the threatened fines and suspensions in the world. Because then front office and coaching staff would care. On a side parity Note, While I am a life long Steelers fan, and all 6 have been in my lifetime, the best super bowl for me ever was seeing the Giants win, because it was such a non-parity game. As I like to say about movies, A hero is only as cool as his villain.
